Removing a CMM Bottleneck

Have you experienced a CMM bottleneck recently?  We’re running into more customers than ever that are telling us about their CMM Bottlenecks.

CMM Bottleneck’s are caused by the amount of time that it takes to:CMM

  • Setup and fixture parts
  • Program the CMM equipment
  • Perform the inspection
  • Generate the report

Just imagine…

If we could eliminate the need for fixtures, think of the time and resources that could be saved…

If we didn’t need to have a dedicated skilled resource on staff to program the CMM, perform the physical part inspection and generate the report, think about those efficiency gains…

And…If we didn’t need to have a dedicated “clean room” for inspection, think even bigger about cost savings…

How can we achieve this?

Enter the world of Hand Held Laser Scanning and Probing!HandyScan1

  • Accuracy to 30 Microns
  • Full repeatability
  • Simple to set up and use
  • Not affected by heat or vibration *
  • Minimal hardware and software training needed

*Operating temperature range 59 – 104°F (15 – 40°C)

Operating Humidity range (Non condensing) 10 – 90%

Aside from significant cost and time saving, what other immediate benefits could be gained?

  • Opportunity to increase production volumes
  • Reduced risk of missing shipping deadlines

Exceptionally fast data acquisition rates – up to 480,000 points per second can be acquired!HandyScan2

No fixtures needed **

How can we eliminate the need for fixtures?

The hand held laser scanners use Dynamic Referencing to align themselves to the part being scanned, the part could actually be moving whilst it is being scanned!

After the parts have been scanned, the software creates the alignment to nominal CAD data in one of the following ways:

  • Surfaces or cross-sections (measured-to-nominal best-fit, constrainable in rotation/translation, and within tolerance zone)
  • Features (3-2-1, pairs of center points, and GD&T datum reference frames)
  • Reference points and lines (RPS, surface points, and six-point nest)
  • Virtual gauges (caliper, flush & gap, and airfoil)

** Does not apply to flimsy parts or parts that will distort under their own weight

Reporting
Powerful tools are available within the Inspection software that allow for very easy creation of inspection reports.

Conclusion

Many companies have found an almost immediate solution to their CMM Bottleneck by implementing portable Metrology solutions.

These solutions can be implemented as a standalone replacement for a CMM system but equally can be implemented to augment an existing CMM system.

What is the 3D EXPERIENCE Platform?

What is the 3D EXPERIENCE PlatformLast week Adaptive Corporation attended the Dassault Systèmes North American Sales Kickoff.  Dassault Systèmes unveiled a number of new exciting announcements that have been years in the making.  This is a well-conceived approach to Dassault Systèmes’ Cloud and on premise offering, and a fresh approach to product bundling that simplifies packaging.

Dassault Systèmes introduced the 3D EXPERIENCE “Platform” concept in 2012.  Think of “Platform” as your Smartphone.  With the Smartphone, you determine the task, then shop applications (APPS) to perform the desired task.

Dassault Systèmes is taking the same approach moving forward.  You determine the task (based on Role of the user), and the 3D EXPERIENCE Platform provides pre-packaged “APPS” to support the Role.  These APPS are a combination of existing “Brand-solutions”, which are wrapped to support the common “process” in support of the user Role.

This BLOG will share more detail about the new 3D EXPERIENCE Platform in the coming months.  Needless to say, Dassault Systèmes is transforming their solution portfolio making it easier to understand and simplifying the user experience.

ENOVIA Brand Consolidation Continues

enovia_3c_80As part of Dassault’s V6 platform strategy, the ENOVIA organization is continuing to be restructured geographically.  Although no official word has been released, multiple sources at Dassault confirm that ENOVIA V6 (ENOVIA Mid-market and ENOVIA High-end) development and other activities are being further centralized in France and in the U.S. (specifically at the new Dassault Americas headquarters in Lowell, MA).  Matrix One employees were the first to relocate to the new Lowell offices back in 2007, followed by members of the VPLM team in 2008.  A number of SmarTeam employees are planning to relocate to both Lowell and to the main Dassault campus in Velizy-Villacoublay, France.

Despite these moves, ENOVIA SmarTeam V5 development will continue in Israel indefinitely with end-of-life for this version nowhere in sight.  Sources at Dassault are quick to note that these organizational shifts are not an indication of a change in the overall ENOVIA product strategy, and that today’s SmarTeam customers can be assured of a path to ENOVIA V6 in the future.

Adaptive is keenly interested in these changes, and in the efforts that Dassault is making to deliver on the promise of PLM 2.0 in ENOVIA V6.  If you have questions about this news or about V6, please don’t hesitate to contact us for more information.
